By William Shakespeare
Directed by David Churchill
Shakespeare’s thrilling drama is perhaps, alongside Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” the greatest psychological investigation of the murderous guilty conscience in literature. The shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies, it catapults its audience through Scottish battlefields; pestilent, witch infested bogs; a castle whirling with supernatural forces; and a succession of murders that lead to a final, climactic battle and an overthrow of power.
Seduced and coerced by his wife to murder their benevolent king, Macbeth at once regrets their choice, and the couple descends into a sleepless world haunted by ghosts and embattled nerves, where the psyche, imprisoned by reverberating guilt, consumes its conscience, ultimately destroying itself. Set in raw, brutal, 11th century Scotland, the production aims to honor the complexity of Shakespeare’s text, with its dualities of blunt male power/female stratagems, Christian/pagan themes, darkness/light, and falsehood/
authenticity, all within the beauty and power of his poetry.
