Mix Tape to My Mother

Music is many things. It is almost the entirety of my world. One thing I love most about my life in music is musical collaboration—I love to see what happens in the space between people, between musicians and between the musicians and the Music itself. What can be created? Experienced? Revealed? In all of my myriad collaborations, nothing is quite as special as the collaboration to be shared on May 7th—this concert with my amazing daughter, Ada.

 

When Deana Duncan at WICA asked us last fall to please do a concert together, I wasn’t sure Ada would bite. She is an actress, and while she often sings from the theater stage, her self-concept wasn’t “singer.” But as luck would have it, she DID say yes! Actually, we both said, “I will if SHE will.” So here we are, presenting our mother-daughter hearts in song in this concert Ada entitled, Mix Tape to My Mother.

 

Those of us at a certain age will appreciate the joy that IS a well-crafted mix tape, made in love and gifted to someone for their listening pleasure. I am please that the “youth of today” are taking up this task, with the mix tape making a kind of comeback in its own vintagey, modernized way. I love this concept—music shared with intention, with someone we love in mind.

 

So in Mix Tape to My Mother you’ll hear everything from jazz to country to pure improvisation to musical theater, and with a few surprises thrown in to hopefully delight. We hope there’ll be a little something for everyone in this gift from us to you.
