Jacob Lawrence, a social realist, documented the African American experience in several series devoted to Toussaint L’Ouverture, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, life in Harlem, and the civil rights movement of the 1960s. He was one of the first nationally recognized African American artists.
A devoted teacher most of his life, Lawrence accepted a tenured position at the University of Washington in 1971 and retired as a professor emeritus in 1986. He died in Seattle, WA in 2000.

Rebecca Albiani has been an arts lecturer at the Frye Art Museum and in the Puget Sound area for the last two decades. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Venice and graduated with honors in Art History from Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley.
