Towards the end of his life Brahms met Richard Mühlfeld and became entranced with the sound of the clarinet. This meeting led Brahms to write the sonata in Eb for clarinet and piano. He reworked both the Eflat and the F major sonatas for viola and for violin, with adjustments in both the piano and string parts. These sonatas were Brahms’ last chamber music compositions. Florence Price was a Black American composer whose work was the focus of Agave Ensemble’s recent GRAMMY nominated album “American Originals”. Her work synthesizes her academic training in European art music with American vernacular and frequently incorporates hymns and spirituals.
