Maria Oksentiyivna Prymachenko (1909-1997) was born to a Ukrainian peasant family. Despite having only four years of schooling, she became a master embroiderer before shifting to watercolor and gouache and impressing Picasso with her talent. Her brilliantly colored work, inspired by fairy tales and the natural world, is a symbol of hope in modern Ukraine.
