A Conversation on the State of American Politics with David Horsey

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts 565 Camano Avenue Langley, WA, 98260 United States (map)

Dave Horsey returns to the WICA stage on November 3 to join Robert Merry in a “show and tell” session in which the distinguished editorial cartoonist will demonstrate his drawing and satirical skills while also talking about his life, his career, and his views on the state of American politics. Horsey served as interviewer when Merry, the regular host for WICA’s political conversation series, became the interview subject in a kind of role reversal. Now Merry will revert to his regular role, and Horsey will be the interviewee.

Horsey, who grew up in Seattle, demonstrated his interest in editorial cartooning while still in high school, producing editorial satire for Ingraham High’s student newspaper, the Cascade. He quickly became the top cartoonist as a freshman at the University of Washington Daily, generating enough acclaim to become the first cartoonist in Daily history to become the campus paper’s editor. After graduation in 1976, he became a reporter at the Bellevue Journal-American but soon was recruited as the lead cartoonist for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, a position he held for 32 years. He also has appeared in many newspapers across the country through syndication. He has received two Pulitzer Prizes, in 1999 and 2003, and also received the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for cartoons related to social justice issues. Horsey’s work remains syndicated, and he draws frequently for The Seattle Times.
