The Revolutionists

  • Whidbey Island Center for the Arts PO Box 52 | 565 Camano Avenue Langley, WA 98260 (map)

Four beautiful, badass women lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. This grand, dream-tweaked comedy is about art and activism, feminism and terrorism, and compatriots and chosen sisters.

From Playwright Lauren Gunderson: “I have found that this play is being produced across the country more than almost any other production of mine at the moment. Something about this group of women fighting for their lives and for a free and fair country resonates now more than when I wrote it six years ago. I wonder why :) But to me it’s not the politics or history that makes the story so compelling (though its history is all true!), it is the feminism and its comedy and joy. Combining both character rich comedy and intense civil unrest brings both the heart and the drive of these characters to the forefront. We laugh with them even as we feel deeply for them. That’s a successful night at the theater for me. The truth is I wrote this play for myself because it is the kind of work that I wanted to see: women centered but universal to all audiences, comic but moving, feminist and humanist. Vive la play!”
