The Trial of Doctor Fuchetti – an American play, by local playwright Gaither M. Kodis, is an exploration around the issue of making choices. Imagine a doctor creating and releasing a deadly virus into the world-wide population knowing it would kill many but, in the end, perhaps save many on an overpopulated planet…because the alternative is a nuclear war with an adversary.
Gaither wrote this play 46 years ago and it remains strangely and terrifyingly still relevant today, complete with a virus, artificial intelligence, nuclear standoff, acronyms you would not believe, and selecting which disaster ought to befall humanity. Perhaps its most profound and critical question: “is judgement the curse of knowledge?”
The staged reading features 8 local actors including: Vito Zingerelli, Jim Scullin, and Eric Mulholland and featuring Grace Webb as a young AI computer destined to judge all of humanity. Directed by Deana Duncan.
The evening consists of a 40-minute staged reading and a 20-minute interview with the playwright. The interview is moderated by Peter Morton followed by an audience Q&A.
Playwright Gaither Kodis is a veteran Air Force Pilot and lawyer who conceived this play after serving the US Strategic Air Command during the cold war with the Soviets. Gaither lives in South Whidbey.
Moderator Peter Morton is a Langley resident, past WICA Board member and retired vice president of Boeing.
