Opening night will be a special event with a community conversation moderated by Vito Zingarelli, speaking with WICA’s and ISF’s Executive Artistic Directors Deana Duncan and Olena Hodges, respectively, as the first Act before the filmed performance of The Book of Sirens from Kyiv, Ukraine.
The Book of Sirens was created and performed in ProEnglish Theatre, the theatre that transformed into a bomb shelter in March 2022 in Kyiv. It became an international symbol of cultural resistance. It promotes culture as a main weapon in the fight for basic human values.
The story is partly based on The Book Thief by Markus Zusak and Forgotten we Shall Be by Héctor Abad Faciolince. The show also aims to memorialize the experience of the theatre team’s life in bomb shelter in March and share it with the world in order to create a better understanding of each other.
